Designing your garden here in Cyprus is the most important step in order to know that you will have a pleasurable, easy care and beautiful garden for many years to come. Designing your garden can depend on many aspects and these points can be vital and will depend on the success of a Mediterranean garden projects. These points can be identified as follows; 1. Topography of the surrounding area. (High altitude, low altitude). Depending on the topography of the area, this can greatly affect the types of plants that you can use that will grow happily in that particular environment. For instance, if you are living in high altitude with hardy evergreen indigenous trees and shrubs surrounding you, you know you have to be aware that many more delicate plants will not survive in this environment. 2. Soil types, what is the conditions of your soil, is it poor, chalky soil, or healthy red soil full of nutrients, again, this will effect the types of plants you can use. 3. Depth of soil, what is your depth of your soil level, if it is too shallow or sitting on a bed of solid rock then it would be senseless to grow shrubs or trees that have deep root systems. 4. Full sun or full (partial) shade. This may sound a strange question but here in Cyprus there are houses that have got gardens that are in shade most of the day, if this the case, it is not possible to grow Mediterranean plants that love the full sun, such as Bougainvillea etc. 5. Are the owners going to live here full time only or a few weeks of the year. This is a very important question as the plant types you chose can reflect on this, and also, a constant monthly maintenance service is necessary as soon as a garden is complete, the reason for this shall be explained later. 6. Focal points. When you begin to design a garden it is necessary to bring something into your garden that will be aesthetically pleasing to the onlooker. For example, when you first walk into a garden your eye should immediately take you to a focal point and this point should be bold enough for your eye to see instantly and also it should be the furthest point away from you, therefore allowing you to cast your eye through the rest of the garden to explore the garden before you reach the focal point at the furthest end, then this will entice the viewer to walk into the garden. All gardens should have a focal point and it should always be the first visible object when you area approaching a property from the drive or road in order to create impact for the viewer. 7. Choosing your plants for suitability for the owner living arrangements. For instance, many owners of villas here in Cyprus chose to go back to the UK but use their villas as holiday homes, coming maybe every 2 or 3 months. If this is the case then a low maintenance garden is a must, 2 reasons for this, first, all gardens have to be connected with an automatic irrigation system here in Cyprus, giving plants regular watering per day, garden’s cannot survive happily here with erratic watering. Secondly, because we have an automatic irrigation system, coupled with high light levels, plants grow 10 times quicker than they do in the UK (Photosynthesis). Therefore the types of plants you use are vital for the success of a good, long term healthy garden. If you chose plants that get evasive you will be forever cutting back, pruning, feeding and spraying with pesticides. Chose your plants carefully, study your plants or ask for professional help from a qualified and registered landscaper. 8. Finding the correct materials for your garden. If you decide to have a high maintenance garden, leave the soil open and have a stepping stone path, but, remember you need to weed weekly! If you decide to have a low maintenance garden you will need membrane to suppress the weeds and gravel. There are so many types of gravel now to chose, but remember, gravel can look too overbearing if left on its own, so to soften the gravel try large ornamental rocks or stepping stones. 9. Always measure your garden correctly and place design area on a sketch pad so that you can start to decide where plants, focal points, shadows from trees etc. will be put. Also measure the area correctly for materials, such as gravel, height and spread of plants etc. If in doubt, always chose to use reputable, preferably qualified and registered Cyprus landscapers or landscape designers.
