Loukia's Landscape is specialized in Cyprus garden design, as well as other garden works such as decking, fencing, stonewalls, patios, irrigation systems, water features, and of course, plants. Loukia's Landscapes is a small but busy Cyprus Landscaping business run in Paphos. The main source of trade is with UK ex pats who buy new houses in Cyprus and who do not have knowledge of Mediterranean plants and how they grow in Cyprus.

Designing your garden in Cyprus

Loukia's Landscapes will first visit your property to measure your garden. This is a personal service that, as a qualified Landscape Designer, only Loukia can do. Loukia will then design the garden for you and give an exact plant list, including quantity and where plants will be situated according to the design. At the same time Loukia will give a quotation of complete garden project costs, depending on whether low, medium or a high maintenance garden. If, at this stage the garden project is accepted, the garden project is completely supervised by Loukia.

Ornamental Trees in Cyprus
Grapewine Magazine - Nobember, 2004

One of the most vibrant coloured trees that I have seen growing in the Cyprus coastal towns of Paphos, Geroskipou, Limassol, Larnaca and surrounds is the dramatic "Delonix regia" or commonly known as "Flame of the Forest". If you are looking for this tree at any nursery you will have to ask for it as the Cypriot name "Flouya tou thasous". Although it has the most stunning red coloured flowers borne in racemose inflorescences its real beauty is the way the alternate, 2-pinnate, oblong leaves form to pick up the light and so you always see the dominant greens changing colour. I think this is a charm of a tree and I feel it has not been given enough credit in parks and gardens in Paphos and beyond. The only drawback with this tree is that it suffers terribly with any frosts. This is why it can only be grown in coastal areas. I do recommend however, that you also look out for the impressive displays of the bright red flowers from April to October. Try not to attempt to grow this tree in your garden unless you are sure you have a very good depth of soil, and you do not have any paved or concrete areas close by, as it has a very large surface root system. The only drawback with this tree is that it is deciduous so don’t expect many pretty displays throughout the winter months. However, another tree that I use frequently when I create gardens in Cyprus is the lovely displays of the evergreen tree Schinus molle, or commonly known as the "Pepper tree". Again, if you are looking for this tree in nurseries or garden centres ask for the Cypriot name "Artimathkia". The reason for its popularity, in my eyes, is that it has these lovely pendulous deep-brown branches showing alternate pinnate leaves, and because it is evergreen it holds this showy ornamental display all throughout the winter months when most trees look dull. It also has lovely clusters of rosy/red fruits (pepper berries) with white flowers appearing from April-October. It’s a short tree compared to most and can tolerate fairly any poor soils, given a decent depth. Another lovely deciduous tree, similar to the shape of the Schinus molle leaf, is the broad crowned Albizia julibrissin, or commonly known as "Silk tree". Look out for this tree named "Alipitzia" in Cypriot nurseries and garden centres. The one distinct difference it shows to separate it from any other tree I have seen in Cyprus is the amazing showy large feathery flowered spherical heads from May to September. They are white at the base, going more pink as you come up to the top of each filament. More trees next month!
